About
Jason Louv
Jason Louv is the author or editor of eight books, most recently John Dee and the Empire of Angels: Enochian Magick and the Occult Roots of the Modern World (Inner Traditions, 2018), a history of Western civilization's obsession with the Apocalypse told through the magicians John Dee, Aleister Crowley, and Jack Parsons.
For more than twenty-five years he has studied, practiced, and reported on the world's sacred traditions, including indigenous shamanism, the meditative traditions of India and Tibet, and Western magick. He teaches meditation and magick at Magick.Me, the online school he founded, and has hosted the podcast Ultraculture With Jason Louv since 2015. He is President of Ultraculture Incorporated, the media company behind both.
As a journalist he reported for VICE News and Motherboard on the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the Line 61 oil pipeline, and NSA surveillance, and wrote for Boing Boing. As a communications strategist he has written advertising that ran on Times Square billboards and worked on astronaut Buzz Aldrin's campaign for a permanent human presence on Mars, which Aldrin presented to President Obama aboard Air Force One. He has also worked with Google's Artists and Machine Intelligence program on the future of artificial intelligence.
He curates Bound by Fear, Ultraculture's public archive of court records and official findings on spiritual abuse across every tradition, which grew out of his survey of Vodou-linked human trafficking at endvoodootrafficking.org. He also built The America Status Ledger, a source-backed record of damage to American institutions.
In 2026 he published "The Source of Reeds's Function", a paper showing that the Book of Soyga, a cipher manuscript once owned by John Dee, contains the rule that generates its own tables. He writes at Harmland on Substack and Hurt Locker on Medium.
His work has been covered in Smithsonian Magazine, Publishers Weekly, DAZED, and VICE. He has been a guest on Coast to Coast AM, Team Human With Douglas Rushkoff, and The Duncan Trussell Family Hour, whose interview audio became his Soul Bird role in the Netflix series The Midnight Gospel.
